ARCADIA YACHTS, 12th UNIT OF A85 SOLD TO A BRITISH CLIENT
12th UNIT OF A85 SOLD TO A BRITISH CLIENT
ARCADIA YACHTS’ DEBUT MODEL STILL LEADING-EDGE
– ARCADIA YACHTS has sold the 12th example of its first model – two A85s have splashed each year since the model premiered
– The sale also confirms the Italian brand’s international appeal as the new owner is a British citizen
– The A85 delivers approx. 100 m2 of communal space on its aft-deck
– 40 m2 of this-generation photovoltaic cells guarantee an impressive 4.5 kW of zero-emissions power
Some yachts remain at the cutting-edge for many years after they first appear on the market. The ARCADIA A85 is one such fortunate craft. The very first model from an Italian yard hailed a radical break with tradition on its launch seven years ago and very quickly set a new benchmark for the sector. The design remains so contemporary, in fact, that several new builds making an appearance on the market were clearly inspired by the ARCADIA YACHTS 26-metre.
The yard’s solidity also means that owners only have a short wait for delivery of their yachts. A85 Hull no. 12 is a perfect example, as, with negotiations underway, we quickly put a new unit into production, cutting delivery time to just over four months from the order date.
Man, his relationship with nature and his ability to live in harmony with his surroundings have always been at the very heart of ARCADIA’s design philosophy. Even the most cursory glance at the A85 is confirmation of that approach. Its styling is simple and sober with a harmonious mix of interior and exterior areas. Even the enclosed spaces seem to melt away and disappear into the surrounding natural setting. The linear design of the superstructure and the vertical line of the bow have allowed us to make optimal use of every single inch of available space both interior and exterior – a fact attested to by the generous 100 square metres or so of living area on the main deck which is significantly larger than other yachts of similar dimensions on the market. The A85S’s main saloon is cosy and inviting with a large eight-seater table in its bow area so that diners can be served directly from the galley via a sliding hatch.
The bright winter garden leads into the spacious aft-deck lounge, where the cockpit includes a second table ideal for al fresco lunches and suppers. There is also a large sunning area from where owner and guests can truly luxuriate in the marine environment.
There are four cabins on the lower deck, the most notable of which is, of course, the master amidships. This impressive 32 square metre space includes an unparalleled bathroom with its own large wellness area. The spacious VIP cabin, complete with double bed and walk-in closet, lies forward. Last but not least are the two twin guest cabins. The quarters for the 4 crew are in the bow section.
One of the A85’s other great strengths is its extremely efficient fuel consumption which is 30-50% lower than semi-displacement yachts of comparable dimensions, resulting in similarly lower running costs. These results come thanks to the yacht’s NPL semi-planing hull which was developed by the National Physical Laboratory in England to deliver the most hydrodynamically efficient hull forms and length-beam ratio. The combination of this advanced hull and ARCADIA YACHTS’s exceptionally light superstructure has produced impressive performance figures even under limited engine power which in turn cuts costs. The A85 sports twin 730 hp MAN diesel engines, guaranteeing it a maximum speed of 18 knots and a cruising one of 16. Needless to say, absolute comfort is guaranteed. The engine room is insulated with multilayer sound-absorbent materials and also features silenced exhausts to reduce guest-perceived noise levels. Consequently, a level of just 70 dB was recorded on the aft-deck of the A85 at 12 knots which is just slightly above the murmur of a crowded saloon. Staying with the subject of acoustic comfort, the internal bulkheads were also made using specific sound-absorbent okoumé marine ply panels over an extruded polystyrene closed-cell foam core to guarantee absolute privacy and quiet to guests. The ARCADIA YACHTS’ philosophy focuses not just on fostering a closer relationship with the environment but also on actively safeguarding it. In fact, over 40 square metres of solar panels have been integrated into the A85’s superstructure, yielding around 4.5 kW of power. This is enough to run the main utilities aboard which, in turn, results in a considerable saving in diesel, reduced pollution levels and improved onboard comfort, thanks to a substantial reduction in noise and vibration levels as well as zero emissions.

Arcadia 115, delightful surprise in efficiency and speed
ARCADIA 115 : FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT
The Arcadia 115 offers a delightful surprise with her combination of efficiency and speed
“Probably not necessary to point out that you haven’t seen a motor-yacht quite like this before. But if you can see from the outside that she offers something different, it’s not until you step aboard that you can appreciate just how radical she really is. Imagine the most ice-cool modernist apartment ever conceived and you’re getting some idea. But this one floats, and moves” this is how Ugo Pellegrino – President of Arcadia introduced Arcadia 115.
Her unique appeal runs deeper than interior design, though, to fundamentals such as light and space as shown to such memorable effect in those floor-to-ceiling windows. Headroom is more than 7 feet on the main deck, and well over 8 feet in the private saloon upstairs. The sense of space is enhanced by limitless views through those transparent exterior walls except when the two amidships balconies are folded down, and there are no walls at all.
The 115 doesn’t just feel improbably spacious for her length. Thanks to her beamy, round-bilge hull, she really does offer more internal volume than a typical 115-footer. The 115’s hydrodynamics are key to the Arcadia concept, combining a broad performance envelope with fuel efficiency and seakeeping. Her semi displacement hull form, adapted by Arcadia from designs originating at Britain’s National Physical Laboratory (NPL), allows cruise speeds from 8 knots to almost 17 with little change in running attitude. Plus, the hull’s full sections add more interior depth than a typical planing hull, giving the 115 internal headroom without external height.
From the wide-open spaces of the upper deck to the broad and bright deck saloon, the 115’s entertaining areas are spectacular, with plenty of seating and dining space. Floors and bulkheads on our yacht were finished in oak, with cabinets of contrasting ebony and lacquer, reflective, high-gloss deck-heads, and dark marble in the bathrooms.
The interiors also featured furnishings by Poltrona Frau, although of course Arcadia would be happy to listen to a prospective owner’s ideas for an interior scheme. The glass used on the boat, incidentally, is not the stuff they use for greenhouses: it’s German, double-glazed, and filled with encapsulated, inert gas, which reportedly gives it the insulating qualities of a 20cm brick wall.
From the various layout options, the standard is a four-cabin version of the lower deck, two doubles and two twins. At the upper deck Arcadia 115 offers a jolly cabin (back to the wheelhouse area) that may be assigned to Captain or Vip guests as extra accommodation.
With the spectacular full-beam owner’s suite on the main deck, and four cabins down forward in the well appointed crew’s quarters, the yacht’s full complement is 10/12 guests and 8 crew – ideal in case of yacht charter. The three-cabin lower deck layout features a full-beam VIP suite aft in place of the two doubles. The tender garage can accommodate a 14-foot RIB and two Personal Water scooters.
Loaded as we were with something like 9 tons of fuel and water, not to mention 8 tons of lead ballast in the lowest part of the hull, the 115’s progress through the water was reassuringly determined. Applying 10 degrees of helm revealed a surprisingly tight turning circle and a modest angle of outward heel, which increased as more helm was applied. Long, fixed, roll-dampening fins have also been added in front of the stabilizers.
Arcadia claims that the 5-kilowatt photovoltaic panels (overall of 60 sqm) give the superstructure’s roof glass not only a futuristic look but also provide sufficient power on a bright day to run the refrigerators and freezers, plus lights, fans, and pumps, without the need for a generator, which will make sitting at anchor a whole lot quieter and more environmentally friendly.
For serious passage-making owners might choose to cruise at 8 knots or so to maximize the yacht’s range, but it is at 12.5 knots that the 115 really comes into its own as a luxury cruising machine. At that speed, to be achieved with the 12-cylinder MANs ticking over at a relaxed 1570 rpm, the miles slip by at a satisfactory rate but at a comparatively modest cost in fuel thanks to the yacht’s immense diesel capacity you should manage over 1,200 nautical miles at this speed.
In a yacht that impress for her concept, design, and performance, and also for her sheer presence on the water – that alluring mix of competence and confidence – it was this eerie silence onboard that perhaps made the strongest impression. So while you might not have seen a motor-yacht quite like this before, you certainly haven’t heard one like it.

Arcadia 100, new concept flying-bridge by Arcadia Yachts
Arcadia Yachts unveils full details of A100 and its all new convertible fly-bridge
Arcadia 100 features a new concept flying-bridge, convertible into a sheltered third-deck, completely closed and protected by the side windows that can be raised up electrically to meet the hard-top
Arcadia Yachts widens its 2015 range with the new Arcadia 100′, with Hull #1 currently under construction. With a length overall of 31.06 meters but 29.29 meters waterline and 7.75 meters beam, unusual for yachts of similar size, Arcadia 100 offers a remarkable GT (internal volume), positively influencing the living space on board. Like her larger sister Arcadia 115’, this new entry as well features a third deck and is built according to Arcadia’s “family feeling” style that makes all Arcadia models immediately identifiable.
THE GREAT INNOVATION
Arcadia 100 features a new concept flying-bridge, convertible into a sheltered third-deck, completely closed and protected by the side windows that can be raised up electrically to meet the hard-top, exactly as it happens for the cars. Therefore the whole upper-deck area becomes much more flexible and usable with any weather condition, being air-conditioned in very hot climes or bad weather, or left open and aired if needed, as per any traditional flying-bridge. On the third deck are fitted the wheelhouse, a lounge with sofas and coffee tables, wet-bar and, externally in the aft, a sun-deck.
NPL HULL AND PERFORMANCE
Arcadia 100′ has a semi-displacement hull, NPL type. This kind of hull is named after the National Physical Laboratory of England where tests were conducted to determine its shape for the best ratio of length to beam in terms of hydrodynamic efficiency. Studies were implemented by Arcadia’s technical department prior to adopting the NPL as Arcadia’s hull, resulting in excellent sea keeping qualities and noise reduction, for exceptional comfort. This advanced hull, together with the light Arcadia superstructure, allows very satisfactory performance with low-power engines. It significantly reduces fuel consumption and related running costs compared to other yachts of similar dimensions. Actually the new Arcadia 100′ with two engines by 1,000 hp each reaches a maximum speed of about 18 knots, and offers cruising speed perfect for long distance day trips. Actually, at 16 knots, the fuel consumption is apx. 230 lt/h and at 14 knots this decreases to about 150 lt/h. At economical cruising speed, suitable for night navigation and long range cruises (8/10 knots), the consumption drops down to less than 50 lt/h. The Arcadia 100 cruising range is also favoured by low generator usage thanks to the electrical energy supplied by the solar panels that cover almost all of the superstructure.
ADDITIONAL ENERGY FROM SOLAR PANELS
Solar cells of latest generation are integrated between external and internal surface of double-glazing panels fitted on top of the largest part of the superstructure. This advanced and ecological system supplies enough power to run many equipment and electrical systems, like refrigerators, water circulation, toilettes, lights, A/V, electronics, while recharging batteries. Lets say, the power needed on board while at anchor, excluding the air conditioning, is supplied “free of charge” all day long by the solar panels system and convertor rather than the generators. It results in a significant saving of diesel oil, less pollution and more comfort on board thanks to the substantial reduction of noise, vibration, no gas emission while enjoying your time close to the swim platform. Each double-glazing panel contains a special gas named Krypton, which guarantees a high thermo-isolating coefficient, up to 18° of thermal cooling between interior and exterior temperatures, the equivalent of a 20 cm brick wall.
COMFORT ABOARD
The comfort aboard the Arcadia 100′ is the product of the high level of attention the yard has dedicated during construction to lowering of noise and vibrations, by the use of solutions optimizing the diffusion of these natural phenomenon and reducing their perception by guests to a minimum. Also the lack of steps, in order to obtaining flash decks on each level as a habit in all Arcadia Yachts, facilitate the circulation on board and allows a sense of comfort and continuity that is unusual in yachts of this size.
LAY-OUT AND INTERIORS
The yard proposes many internal layout variations, either four or five cabins, to meet the requirements of the majority of owners and ensure the proper comfort and privacy expected on yachts of this size. However the yard is available to develop custom interiors and different finishing solutions in order to satisfy the buyer’s expectations on every Arcadia model. The Arcadia 100′ standard version has the full beam owner’s suite amidships on the lower deck, with the bed offset to starboard facing forward. Behind the bed are the washroom with bathtub, sanitaries and twin sinks, and the dressing room with adjacent vanity area. To port we find an area to relax in, with armchairs and side- tables. All the features are integrated in a spacious environment, illuminated by large openings in the hull. Forward we have two twin cabins with their own washrooms, and then the V.I.P. Cabin. The latter has a queen size bed, a large private washroom with a separate area for the sanitaries, a vanity zone, and abundant illumination.
Other optional versions for this Arcadia 100 offer the owner’s suite afore on the main deck, opening directly on the private sun-deck, convertible in dinette, on then bow. In this case, if needed, the suite on the lower deck can be divided into two identical guest cabins by means of a folding wall, to increase the number of rooms. In both versions the crew area is spacious and finished with care; the yard has always kept crew comfort in high regard.
On the main deck, the grand living area directly connected to the cockpit, features both salon and dining zones, creating a single, bright and airy space, characterized by the transparency of the vertical side crystals and the solar panels on the ceiling. The whole living area on the main deck can be transformed into a “patio” on the sea thanks to sides sliding doors and gunwale balconies, creating an amazing “al fresco” zone with an unique sea view. The yard is proud of this distinctive solution, found only on the A 100′.
