Benetti celebra 140 anni di eccellenza Italiana
Benetti è uno dei più antichi cantieri al mondo dedicati alla costruzione di motoryacht di lusso.
Fondato nel 1873 da Lorenzo Benetti, inizia la sua attività costruendo imbarcazioni di legno per il commercio locale e internazionale. Dopo la morte di Lorenzo, i suoi due figli Gino ed Emilio ne assumono la direzione, cambiando il nome in “Fratelli Benetti” e ottenendo in breve tempo grande attenzione e riconoscimento anche fuori dell’area del Mediterraneo.
Dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, con la scomparsa dei velieri commerciali in legno, Benetti sposta la sua produzione verso imbarcazioni in acciaio destinate al tempo libero, arrivando a produrre mega yacht di lusso nei primi anni Sessanta.
Dal 1980 la flotta include grandi motor yacht da 30 a 60 metri, tra i quali spicca il lancio del famosissimo “Nabila” di ben 86 metri.
Nel 1985 il Cantiere viene acquisito dal celebre costruttore Azimut di Torino, tappa che inaugura una nuova gestione e permette a Benetti di diventare la realtà moderna e tecnologicamente avanzata che oggi conosciamo: un cantiere navale orientato al futuro e all’innovazione continua, che conserva però intatte le antiche fondamenta fatte di esperienza, competenza e passione artigianale. Per Benetti, costruire imbarcazioni significa portare avanti una storia fatta di innovazione, stile e qualità coerente alla propria filosofia. Significa proseguire un cammino di diversificazione produttiva per rispondere alle esigenze sempre più complesse degli Armatori di tutto il mondo.
Una volta abbandonato il legno e comprese le potenzialità del materiale composito per la produzione di superyacht, già nei primi anni ’60, Benetti passa dalla realizzazione di imbarcazioni in metallo all’utilizzo dell’acciaio e dell’alluminio. Grazie a questi materiali, anche combinati fra loro, Benetti oggi progetta, costruisce e commercializza motoryacht full-custom dislocanti e semi-dislocanti in un range di lunghezza molto vario – dai 93 piedi ad oltre 90 metri. Vere e proprie navi taylor made in grado di garantire all’Armatore la sua idea di yacht mantenendo inalterato il family-feeling Benetti, vera e propria espressione del più alto stile italiano e di eleganza senza tempo. E proprio questa capacità costruttiva, unita all’eccellenza nella qualità, alla cura maniacale dei dettagli, alla perfezione dell’opera finale, ha reso Benetti leader mondiale e icona italiana della nautica di lusso.
Nel corso degli anni l’azienda è notevolmente cresciuta e cambiata, non seguendo ma anticipando sempre i tempi. Una volta la Fratelli Benetti era nota per la costruzione di golette in legno a tre alberi destinate ad un uso commerciale. Oggi, gli yacht Benetti sono protagonisti nei porti più esclusivi del mondo. Eleganti e curati in ogni dettaglio, i megayacht Benetti occupano una posizione “Quest’anno non sarà solo il 140° anniversario di Benetti ma anche il 10° anniversario dell’acquisizione del Cantiere di Livorno rilevato dalla famiglia Orlando. Un successo sancito anche dalla classifica della prestigiosa rivista specializzata Show Boats International che, per il 12° anno consecutivo, ha incoronato Benetti quale primo costruttore al mondo di megayacht Custom sopra i 30 metri.
TIMELINE
1873 – 1987
-1873 – Lorenzo Benetti (1844-1914) acquista il Cantiere Darsena Lucca e fonda il Cantiere Benetti alla cui direzione rimane per i successivi 40 anni affiancato negli ultimi tempi dai figli Gino ed Emilio.
-1873/1904 – In poco più di un trentennio Lorenzo Benetti vara oltre 30 bastimenti (5 golette, 3 tartane, 13 brigantini goletta, 8 navicelli, 3 cutter).
-1910 – Lorenzo Benetti ottiene una concessione demaniale nella Darsena Italia (attuale sede legale) dove sorge il secondo cantiere.
-1914 – Alla morte di Lorenzo, Gino ed Emilio rinominano il cantiere in “Fratelli Benetti” e portano avanti l’attività del padre.
– 1927 – In seguito alla morte di Gino, i due figli Giuseppe e Virgilio succedono al padre, mentre Emilio viene affiancato dai figli Maurizio e Bertani.
– 1873/1935 – Sono passati ormai 60 anni e in questo arco di tempo i cantieri Fratelli Benetti hanno varato oltre 100 velieri (21 golette, 3 tartane, 63 brigantini goletta, 12 navicelli, 7 cutter, 6 navi goletta).
– 1941 – Il Cantiere costruisce “Maria”, la prima imbarcazione diesel, pionieristica per l’epoca, con lo scafo in acciaio. Il progetto è curato da Maurizio e Bertani.
-1954 – Il Cantiere viene diviso in due unità: “Cantiere Fratelli Benetti”, specializzato nella costruzione di barche a vela e a motore, e “Cantiere M & B Benetti”, dedicato esclusivamente alla costruzione di navi commerciali.
-1963 – Con la morte di Emilio Benetti la gestione del “Cantiere Fratelli Benetti” passa al nipote Giuseppe e al figlio più giovane di questi, Lorenzo. Quest’ultimo, facendo propria l’eredità costruttiva delle generazioni che lo hanno proceduto, è destinato a diventare uno dei protagonisti della cantieristica internazionale nel settore degli yacht di lusso.
-1978 – Varo di “Vanina”, disegnata per un Armatore italiano dall’Architetto Navale americano Kauffman. Vanina, che inaugura una lunga serie di barche a vela e di motorsailer, è progettata per vincere la Admiral’s Cup.
-1979 – Varo di “Nabila”, disegnata da John Bannenberg per Adnan Kashoggi. Con i suoi 86 metri di lunghezza, 2465 tonnellate di stazza e interni da sogno, “Nabila” diventa lo yacht più famoso dell’epoca.
-1985 – Paolo Vitelli, proprietario e presidente di Azimut, rileva il cantiere “Fratelli Benetti” e lo rinomina “Cantiere Benetti”.
-1987 – Varo di “Rima”, la prima imbarcazione costruita dopo l’acquisizione da parte di Azimut. Pensata per un Armatore del Medio Oriente, ha gli interni progettati da Terence Disdale ed è molto veloce nonostante abbia lo scafo in acciaio.
1988 – 2001
-1988 – Il Cantiere costruisce il 27 metri “Azimut Atlantic Challenger” con cui tenta la conquista del Nastro Azzurro per la traversata atlantica più veloce.
-1994 – Varo del primo “Ambrosia”, 45 metri (Ambrosiana). Di proprietà di un armatore cinese, nata dalla collaborazione tra gli architetti Stefano Natucci per gli esterni e François Zuretti per gli interni, è il fiore all’occhiello di Benetti fino a quel momento.
-1995 – Varo di “Golden Bay”, primo di una serie di yacht di 50 metri che saranno successivamente costruiti dal Cantiere.
-1998 – Parziale acquisizione del cantiere Moschini di Fano e varo del primo Benetti Classic 35 mt, “Stella Fiera”.
-1999 – Ampliamento del Cantiere e costruzione dei nuovi uffici di Viareggio. Ad Avigliana viene completato il nuovo stabilimento, che si estende su una superficie di 100.000 metri quadri.
-2000 – Varo di “Reverie”, 70 mt, il secondo maggior scafo mai costruito dal Cantiere. Nello stesso anno Azimut acquisisce il complesso di 41.000 metri quadri della Lusben Craft, nel porto di Viareggio.
-2001 – Azimut acquisisce il cantiere Gobbi di Gropparello di Sariano, vicino Piacenza.
2002 – 2012
-2002 – Varo di “Patricia”, il primo Vision 45 mt. A Fano si completa l’acquisizione del cantiere Moschini. Nello stesso anno viene commissionato il terzo “Ambrosia”, 65 metri, primo yacht al mondo dotato dell’avanzato sistema di propulsione diesel-elettrico Azipod di ABB.
-2003 – Azimut Benetti acquisisce il Cantiere Fratelli Orlando di Livorno. Al 2003 risalgono anche il varo di “Libra Star”, il primo Tradition 30 metri, e l’inizio dei lavori nella Marina di Varazze, su iniziativa di Azimut Capital. Al 1° settembre Benetti ha consegnato 70 yacht superiori a 30 metri.
-2004 – Acquisizione di Fraser Yacht in accordo con V. Ships. Nello stesso anno si ricordano l’accordo con Fincantieri per la costruzione di Yacht superiori ai 70 metri e la presentazione del nuovo Classic 120, 37 metri.
-2005 – Benetti riceve un ordine senza precedenti: viene commissionata la costruzione di 4 yacht da 59 metri.
-2005 – “Galaxy”, 56 mt, è il primo yacht ad essere varato nel cantiere di Livorno. Sempre nel 2005 viene presentato il Benetti Legend, 24 metri, a completamento della gamma Composit. L’anno si chiude con il varo di “Ambrosia”, 65 metri.
-2009 – Realizzazione del nuovo capannone nella Darsena Lucca, che permette di allestire contemporaneamente 3 yacht fino ai 50 metri. Nasce anche Benetti Class Range, la nuova gamma in composito tra 93 e 145 piedi.
-2010 – Presentata a Livorno la nuova linea semi-dislocante in alluminio, da 47 a 55 metri. Al Salone Internazionale di Cannes vengono mostrati i primi due esemplari della nuova Benetti Class Range, Delfino 93’ e Tradition 105’.
-2011 – Varo del Crystal 140’, terzo modello della Benetti Class Range.
-2012 – Ordine del primo yacht di oltre 90 mt e varo del Classic Supreme 132’, quarto modello della Benetti Class Range.

Benetti is one of the oldest builders of luxury motor yachts in the world.
Established by Lorenzo Benetti in 1873, the company began life building wooden boats used for local and international trade. After the death of Lorenzo, his two sons Gino and Emilio took over the management of the boatyard. They changed its name to Fratelli Benetti and quickly built up a reputation that extended far beyond the Mediterranean.
After the second world war, with the disappearance of commercial sailing vessels built from wood, Benetti changed direction and began producing pleasure craft made from steel. Then in the early 1960s the boatyard produced its first luxury mega yachts.
Since 1980 the fleet has included big motor yachts in the 30 to 60 meter range and beyond, not least the famous 86-meter ‘Nabila’.
In 1985 the Boatyard was acquired by the celebrated Turin-based boat builder Azimut Yacht, which brought in new management and transformed Benetti into the modern, technologically advanced reality we know today: a forward-looking and innovative boatyard, but also one that proudly retains its traditional values of experience, skill and a passion for fine craftsmanship.
In fact, for Benetti, building yachts means carrying on the tradition of innovation, style and quality that has shaped the company’s approach and culture. It means continuing to diversify production in order to satisfy the increasingly complex needs expressed by Owners throughout the world.
Benetti has a time-honoured tradition in yacht building. After abandoning wood and being the first to realise the potential of composite materials for the production of megayachts, as early as the 1960s it made the transition from metal boats to the steel and aluminium.
Today Benetti utilizes these materials, alone or combined, to design and build full-custom displacement and semi-displacement motor yachts in a broad variety of lengths from 93 feet to 90+ meters. These truly tailor made vessels embody the Owner’s idea of what a yacht should be, while retaining the Benetti family-feeling that is a natural expression of the finest Italian style and timeless elegance. This production capacity, united with world class quality, fanatical attention to detail and a perfect end result, have made Benetti a world leader and an Italian luxury yacht icon.
Over the years the shipyard has grown and changed, not following but anticipating the times. Once the Fratelli Benetti boatyard was famous for building three-masted wooden schooners for commercial use. Today Benetti motor yachts turn heads at the world’s most famous and exclusive ports of call. 140 years of history, close to 300 boats built, over 300,000 sq mt of production facilities at six shipyards in Italy (Viareggio, Livorno and Fano), 34 yachts under construction at present time including a 90-meter mega yacht.

It is a success story confirmed by the last “Global Order Book” that awarded Azimut|Benetti Group as the “largest builder in the world for custom yachts over 24 meters” for the thirteenth year in a row.

1873 – 1987
-1873 Lorenzo Benetti (1844-1914) buys the shipyard Darsena Lucca and establishes the shipyard Benetti which he directs for the next forty years, assisted by his sons Gino and Emilio towards the end of his tenure.
-1873/1904 Lorenzo Benetti launches over 30 vessels: 5 schooners, 3 tartans’, 13 brigantines, 8 navicellis’, and 3 cutters.
-1910 Lorenzo Benetti secures state authorization to build his second shipyard in the Darsena Italia, where the registered office is still found today.
-1914 With Lorenzo’s death, Gino and Emilio rename the shipyard Fratelli Benetti and continue their father’s business.
-1927 After Gino Benetti’s passing, his sons Giuseppe and Virgilio take his place, while Emilio’s sons Maurizio and Bertani assist their father.
-1873/1935 The Benetti shipyards launch over 100 sailing vessels: 21 schooners, 3 tartans’, 63 brigantines, 12 navicellis’,, 7 cutters, and 6 barkentines.
-1941 The Benetti shipyard launches “Maria”, pioneering the first steel hulled, diesel vessel. Maurizio and Bertani manage the project.
-1954 The Benetti shipyard is split into two branches: “Fratelli Benetti shipyard”, specializing in the construction of sail and motor leisure craft, and “M&B Benetti shipyard”, dedicated solely to the construction of commercial vessels.
-1963 With Emilio Benetti’s death, the management of the Fratelli Benetti shipyard is handed down to his nephew Giuseppe and Giuseppe’s youngest son, Lorenzo. The latter, making the previous generation’s legacy his own, will later become a protagonist in the sector of international luxury yacht construction.
-1978 The Benetti shipyard launches “Vanina”. Designed to win the Admiral’s Cup by the American naval architect Scott Kaufman for an Italian owner, “Vanina” is the first of a long line of sailing and motor yachts.
-1979 “Nabila” is launched. With exquisite interiors, she is 86 meters long and displaces 2,465 tons. Designed by Jon Bannenberg for Adnan Kashoggi, “Nabila” becomes the most famous yacht of her time.
-1985 The owner and president of Azimut, Paolo Vitelli, takes over the “Fratelli Benetti shipyard” and renames it “Benetti shipyard”.
-1987 The Benetti shipyard launches “Rima”, the first vessel built under the new Azimut management. Designed for a client from the Middle East, her interiors are designed by Terrence Disdale. Even with her steel hull, “Rima” is quite fast.
1988 – 2001
-1988 The Benetti shipyard builds the “Azimut Atlantic Challenger” to attempt the Blue Riband trophy for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic.
-1994 Launch of the first 45 meter “Ambrosia”. With a Chinese owner, she is the brainchild of exterior architect Stefano Natucci and interior designer François Zuretti, the most extraordinary yacht built by Benetti up until then.
-1995 Launch of “Golden Bay”, the first of a series of 50 meter yachts to be built by the yard.
-1998 Partial acquisition of the Moschini shipyard in Fano and launch of the first Benetti Classic 35 meter, “Stella Fiera”.
-1999 Building of new offices in Viareggio and vast enlargement of the construction facilities.
-2000 Launch of “Reverie”: at 70 meters, she is the second biggest vessel ever built by the yard. Azimut buys the ex Lusben Craft 41,000 sq. meter yard in Viareggio harbor.
2002 – 2012
-2002 Launch of “Patricia”, the first Vision 45. The acquisition of the Moschini yard in Fano is fulfilled. The third “Ambrosia” is commissioned; at 65 meters, she is the first yacht in the world to use ABB’s Azipod, a state of the art diesel- electric propulsion system.
-2003 Azimut Benetti acquires the Fratelli Orlando shipyard in Livorno. “Libra Star” and the first Tradition 30 meters are launched. In September Benetti delivers their 70th over 30 meters yacht.
-2004 An agreement is reached with Fincantieri for the construction of yachts over 70 meters. The Classic 120′ is introduced.
-2005 Benetti receives an unprecedented order for four 59 meters yachts. The 56 meters “Galaxy” is the first yacht to be launched at the Livorno shipyard. The Composite range of yachts is brought to completion with the introduction of the 24 meter “Benetti Legend”. The third “Ambrosia” is delivered.
-2009 Construction of the new shipyard in the Darsena Lucca, with space for fitting-out three 50 meter yachts at the same time. Introduction of the new Benetti Class range, semi-custom yachts from 93 to 164 feet.
-2010 Introduced in Livorno the new 47 to 55 meters aluminum semi-planing range. The first two yachts of the Benetti Class range are unveiled at the Cannes International Boat Show: the Delfino 93’ and the Tradition 105’.
-2011 The Crystal 140’ is launched, the third model in the Benetti Class range.
-2012 The Benetti shipyard takes its first order for an over 90 meter yacht and launches the Classic Supreme 132’, the fourth model in the Benetti Class range.
